What do the phrases below have in common?
- The path from sickness to health
- The blind woman who had the vision to do what was right
- One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind (maybe you’ve already come across this one!)
Each phrase contains contrast.
The inclusion of contrast is a straightforward way to create both drama and momentum during your talks. And it’s been proven that speeches that contain more contrast, receive more standing ovations!
Whether or not you’re an ovation seeker, you owe it to your audience to create an exciting and engaging experience.
Do this by building contrast into your content.
If you’re a health coach, you might use a client story in which you describe your client’s body as “starving” for nutrients followed by it being “satisfied and satiated” after your treatments.
Or a lawyer might help steer clients through the “legal jungle” using a “simple road map”.
While you write your speech, if you struggle to find contrasts for your words, then use a thesaurus to find ‘antonyms’ or opposites.
You’ll doubtless come across some juicy vocabulary that will give your audience a treat.
Persuade your audience by taking them on a journey from where they are now to where they want to be.
Not just once during your speech, but multiple times.
The best way to do this is using the power of contrast.
