So now, some of you might be thinking “oh, bloody hell, this empathy thing sounds like hard work.” So if you’re worried that it is too much hard work, then first of all, understand how important empathy now is in the workplace. Now, every year, LinkedIn publishes a list of the top soft skills and most recently, this is the list. Number one is creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability and emotional intelligence, for the first time, has now made this list. And emotional intelligence. What does that have to do with empathy? Well, empathy is part of the skills that make up emotional intelligence. So employers are looking for people who are emotionally intelligent, who are empathetic, who have great social skills. This is not just a nice to have, it’s important. Now, here’s a quote from Brene Brown. Put your hand up if you’ve heard of Brene Brown. So she does a lot of things, she’s done a lot of speaking about vulnerability, about courage. And she says, vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, fee and creativity. So if you can be vulnerable enough to have these conversations, not knowing the outcome, not knowing if you’re going to be moved, then this is the opening for so much.
