Shola Kaye explores the importance of courage and empathy in our daily discussions.

Transcript – The Benefits Of Being A Courageous Feeler In The Workplace

We’ve got to get used to talking about things that are outside of our experience. And so part of being empathetic is having the courage to go there with people. Even if they say something to us like “oh, this happened to me, or I went there, or I’ve done this thing” and we’ve got no experience of it whatsoever. It doesn’t mean to say we have to exit ourselves from the conversation. We can still be curious. We can still say to them, “what was that like?” or that must have been difficult” or “wow, that must have been challenging.” That is being empathetic rather than, “oh, my God, did she expect me to be a psychologist?” and then running out. So this is what being courageous is all about. And I love this quote from Maya Angelou. She says, “I think we all have empathy, but we may not have enough courage to display it.” Because how are we going to understand people unless we have the courage to have those conversations with them?
