Transcript – Unleashing Empathy to Tackle Bias at Work: A Powerful Approach

If you’re making decisions in the workplace, I want you to think about how you can use empathy to combat or to fight against biased decision-making. So here are some questions you can ask yourself, and let me zoom in on these. Will my decision benefit some identities more than others? So this is going to start you thinking about, well, which identities am I possibly affecting here with this decision? If I were about to be impacted by this decision, how would I feel? This is you starting to walk in someone else’s shoes to understand what they might be going through or what they might go through if you make a certain decision and then the next one. If I had a different identity, would I make the same decision? Right. So if you’re somebody who’s a decision maker, these are really important questions to ensure that you are being fair, that you are being equitable, and it encourages you to be empathetic. Now, if you can’t put yourself in someone else’s shoes, ask them.
