In today’s remote work environment, displaying empathy is more important than ever. Shola highlights how vital it is to use tone of voice, pace, and asking questions to establish understanding and connect with others, even when not visible on camera.

Moderator: There were a couple of different questions. About body language, but this time in regards to working remotely, either being over the phone or on a computer, and how you can make sure that you are displaying empathetic body language while you are either on camera or you can’t be seen.

Shola Kaye: Yeah, it’s quite hard. I mean, if you can’t be seen, then it’s not really going to be your body language. It might be your tone of voice, right? So somebody’s speaking slowly and quietly and you’re trying to be empathetic, you’re not going to suddenly speak really fast and very loud, right? Because again, there’s a huge mismatch. So you might want to adapt modulate your pace, your tone to theirs, because, again, that will help you to get into the same sort of state that they’re in terms of, as I say, if you can’t be seen, it’s really hard, but use your voice and then use questions as well. And even one of the things I tell people that I work with, you might start off a meeting and you might, at the beginning of a meeting, say everybody put in the chat, how are you feeling about this project? put one word; or as I’ve done with you, put green, yellow, red. What do you think about this situation? So then you’re giving people an opportunity to share, even in a small way, how they’re feeling.
