So here are a few listening strategies that I’m sure you’ve heard. The first one. Listen to understand, not to respond. All too often we’re listening, waiting for us to get our own word in. But if we just listen to understand better, takes the pressure off us and the other person feels supported. The second one – anyone heard of Eckart Tolle, the writer who wrote The Power of Now and a New Earth? He’s a German writer, this is one from him – and he says that if you hear something that you disagree with, quite often we get reactive, we get triggered, we want to push back. Instead, imagine that your body has got enormous holes in it and that energy of what they’re saying just passes through you and out the other side. So you can stay with people who are saying things that you really disagree with or you really want to push back on. And if you let that energy pass through, you can stay with people who are saying all sorts of things and really listen. So give that one a try. Really does work. And then of course, acknowledging that somebody may have a completely different life experience than yours. And so, of course, they’ll approach things in a different way.
